Weiss Cosmetic & Family Dentistry
Leaving the Dentist Happier than When You
Arrived
For Dr. Jack
Weiss, Birmingham
is more than a city. He attended college at the University
of Alabama and has made Birmingham his home ever
since. He went to dental school at UAB, and practiced for 24 years in the
Southside neighborhood. With bonds so deep to Birmingham, it was no wonder that nearly all
of his patients came with him when he moved his practice to Cahaba River Road two and a half years
ago.
Not
only is Weiss treating many of the same patients he started out with in 1983,
he’s seeing new generations of their families. “I’ve got families where I see
three different generations: grandparents, parents, and kids. I’ve been practicing
long enough that the patients who were children when I first started are now
starting to have kids. So that’s kind of neat, too, to have reached that point
where somebody that I saw when they were five or ten are now in their thirties,
married, starting families of their own.”
Weiss
says he originally began studying dentistry because he liked being able to work
with his hands, and the cosmetic side of dentistry is still what he enjoys the
most about his job. His practice handles all aspects of general dentistry as
well as crowns, veneers, the increasingly popular Invisalign braces, and even
some implants. Patients can even sit and watch DVDs while Weiss uses a
state-of-the-art laser instrument to detect and measure the severity of
cavities.
“It
just makes you feel good when somebody’s smiling as they leave, and you know
that what you’ve done has just made them happier,” he says. “Because you have
to admit, most people just don’t enjoy going to the dentist. But if you can get
them to at least relax a little, enjoy themselves, and leave happy, then that’s
nice. I’ve even had a few people say it was fun.”
Weiss
and his wife Laurie reside in the south metro area and have three sons; two of
them work for Sterne Agee in Birmingham, and a
third is just about to graduate from the University of Alabama.
When he’s not in the office, Weiss works with his hands in a different way.
He’s restoring a 1960 MGA sports car. “Slowly,” he points out with a laugh.
“I’m doing most of the work myself, so it’s a work in progress. Of course,
anyone who’s owned an old British sports car will tell you it’s always a work
in progress.”
